The challenge

Climate risk affects every area of council operations, from governance to finance to assets. Councils carry much of the physical risk from climate hazards, often with limited capacity to manage it, and council leaders need to understand their roles and responsibilities as legal and community expectations rise.

What we’re doing

Practical training and shared expertise so council leaders can make confident, defensible decisions on climate risk.

  • Masterclass: Climate Ready Leadership

An introduction to climate risk for council leaders: what it means for councils and where leadership makes the difference.

  • Climate Governance Deep Dive

How councils can build climate risk into governance, reporting and decision-making.

  • Climate Liability and Legal Readiness

What climate-related legal exposure looks like for councils, and how to prepare.

Who's guiding the project

The webinar series was developed by SECCCA with law firm Allens and leading climate risk expert Sarah Barker. It supports the refreshed Strategic Plan, which positions SECCCA as the region's climate risk and resilience backbone.

What councils get

  • A clear understanding of council leaders' roles and responsibilities on climate risk

  • Case studies and practical takeaways from legal and climate risk experts

  • On-demand recordings for councillors and officers through the SECCCA Member Hub

  • A shared language for climate risk across councils in the region

Why it matters for communities

Well-governed councils make better long-term decisions about roads, drains, buildings and services. Understanding climate risk early helps protect communities and avoids costly decisions that have to be undone later.

Progress
