The Andrews Government has been returned to power, winning a historic third term. In the lead up to the election Victorian Labor announced a range of policies aimed at addressing climate change. Many of these align with the SECCCA policy platform, presented to our political leaders in meetings held prior to the 26th November election.
The Andrew’s Government has committed to increase the Net Zero Target, bringing forward the target from 2050 to 2045. A new interim target has been set to achieve a 75-80% reduction by 2035. The renewable energy target has been increased to 95% by 2035.
To reach these targets the Andrews Government announced it will invest $20million to revive the State Electricity Commission (SEC) . A further $1billion will be invested in renewables with the aim of creating 4.5 Gigawatts of renewable energy. This is the equivalent replacement capacity of coal fired Loy Yang A, which will close in 2035.
The Government has also announced $10 Million for a Hydrogen Worker Training Centre. Hydrogen is heralded as the energy of the future and presents a solution for sectors that are difficult to decarbonise, such as manufacturing and heavy industries.
